Neck Pain Relief – Causes and Treatments

Has neck pain been bothering you lately? Are you looking for an effective solution to get rid of neck pain once and for all? If so, you have come to the right place.  Neck pain is a very wide-spread problem, especially in modern world where a large number of population spend their days hunched at work desks, behind the computer screens. Bad posture and lack of exercise are very common reasons why people tend to develop chronic neck pain. Other reasons might be injuries, scoliosis, muscle strain and even an illness.

A simple cream can help with neck pain relief

The good news is that there are many methods that will help you find relatively quick neck pain relief and prevent it from reoccurring. Every pharmacy has some joint creams for sale that should be applied to the problematic area to ease the pain.  My favourite pain relief cream that i always carry in my bag is Penetrex, your local pharmacist should stock it but if not grab yourself a few tubs from Amazon.com, believe me, you will thank me next time you are in pain. While such treatments are effective it is much wiser to change your lifestyle habits in order to improve the condition of your upper spine and neck. Special orthopedic pillows that will position your spine and neck in the correct angle and prevent straining can be a good solution. Such pillows will not only ease the pain but also help you sleep better and in a much more comfortable position.  I have recently changed my pillow to a memory foam moulded contour neck pillow and my nights sleep are a lot better (but now even harder to get up in the morning).

Exercise is great for effective neck pain relief

Neck pain might also arise from muscle strain after exercise. If you feel like this might be the case, ease down on the exercises until your neck is in better condition. Before exercising always do a proper warm-up and execute the movements with correct form, especially if you are working with heavy weights. There are also certain exercises that people with neck and back pain problems should perform in order to ease the pain and move all the cartilages in their right positions. For sudden strains use an ice pack or cold massage and apply it for 15-20 minutes three or four times a day for about three days. Another highly recommended physical activity that improves the back and neck situation is swimming. Slow and controlled swimming is safe, yet very effective as the movements stretch your whole body including the spine and neck areas. Swimming also is a great way to get in shape and tone the muscle in a safe and enjoyable manner.

 Posture is very important to long lasting neck pain relief

Proper stature is extremely important in terms of preventing neck and back pain. If you are constantly working with a computer you should learn how to sit properly with your back straight and your keyboard and monitor at the right height. Similarly, whenever you are walking do your best to keep a straight back with shoulders slightly rolled back. This will not only make you look better, but also do well in preventing scoliosis and a hunch back.

If your neck pain is sharp and severe or does not go away for a very long time then the smartest move would be to visit a doctor. It might be a pinched nerve or a trauma – either way your doctor will determine your condition and provide you with the most effective treatment for the specific case. The doctor might prescribe such treatments as heat or cold application, soft collar traction, physical therapy in form of ultrasound, manipulation or massage. Sometimes you might even have to get some injections of cortisone or anesthetics and if the case is serious a surgery might be necessary.

Alternative treatments for neck pain

There are also some alternative treatments that are being used for chronic neck pain treatment and general neck pain relief. Such treatments include acupuncture and chiropractic massage. The effectiveness of both treatments it is still under question and have not been scientifically proven to be effective in treating back and neck pain.  I personally have found acupuncture to be of great benefit in my quest for back & neck pain relief and do recommend my friends who suffer from back or neck pain do go see a qualified acupuncturist.
